222 m² Rotterdam. 222 m² achterstandswijk.
Onze wijk is de nummer 13 op de lijst van de Vogelaar wijken. Er wonen meer dan 90 nationaliteiten. Van 10920 inwoners hebben maar 6000 een inkomen. Ella Vogelaar kwam hier ooit een nachtje slapen in een speciaal 'logeerhuis' met het motto 'samen buurten, samen binden'.
De Rotterdamse Pact op Zuid pompt honderden miljoenen in nieuwbouw, werkgelegenheid en integratie. Maar hoe is het leven in deze 222 m² als je er van binnen naar kijkt? Deze 222 m² zijn niet alleen een stukje Rotterdam, het lijkt er soms op, alsof de verbinding met de rest van de wereld sterker is, dan de verbinding met de stad (of zelfs het land) waarin wij wonen.
J.J King stelt:
"The traditional world-map needs to be re-interpreted. Waldo Tobler's first law of geography - everything is related to everything else, but closer things are more closely related- is fundamentally inverted under the regime of information"
Wat is ruimte nog in een tijd waar alles met elkaar verbonden is en gelijktijdig van elkaar gescheiden lijkt? Informatie, geschiedenis en mensen lijken meer en meer los te komen van een bepaalde ruimte. En toch vormen zij , zoals van ouds, de ruimte waarin zij elkaar ontmoeten.
Onze studio en woningen staat aan de Blokweg, Hillesluis, deelgemeente Feijenoord. Vanuit deze straat zijn wij begonnen met een allomvattende mapping van onze omgeving. Door middel van fotografie, video en gevonden informatie onderzoeken we de analoge en digitale gegevens van dit stukje Rotterdam, tot in het uiterste:
De architectuur, de straten, het afval, het gewicht van gebouwen. De stenen, deuren, bomen, planten en bewaking camera’s. De inwoners, hun sporen die ze op het internet achterlaten of hun boodschappenlijstjes en herinneringen. Wij kijken vanuit het heelal naar ons stukje Rotterdam (door de ogen van Google earth) en vanuit het perspectief van een zandkorrel. In het kort: wij zijn bezig met een extreme vorm van mapping van deze ruimte. Op zoek naar een nieuwe ‘law of geography’ dat voldoet aan deze tijd van informatie chaos en versnelde ruimtes.

'Stel je voor dat je zelfs zou kunnen bepalen waarnaar je
kijkt?
Denk je dat je dat al doet?
Chinese vrouwen dansen voor Mao, toeristen bezoeken het vrijheidbeeld
in New York, de zedenpolitie arresteert iemand, een politieagent
staat naast een auto, een meisje stapt op een fiets. Wat moet
je met deze beelden, die uit hun eigen context zijn losgerukt
en in hoog tempo op je worden afgevuurd?
Ondertussen klinkt in deze verzameling van gevonden licht
het regelmatig geluid van een diaprojector. Oost-Duitsland.
Klik. Een familiekiekje van een slaapkamer. De zelfde plek,
nu leeg. Aantekeningen van de politie.
Kun je bepalen waarnaar je kijkt of bepaalt het beeldmateriaal
dat voor jou? Meike Eggers en Michael Anhalt onderzoeken de
subtiele grens tussen wat je ziet en wat je denkt te zien.'

‘Since the 1990s the Internet, in combination with digital
depictions, has caused a radical change in human communication. Amateur snapshots have become the most prevalent
images of the 21st century. Today hobbyists publish photos
and films on diverse Internet sites like personal weblogs
or portals such as Flickr or YouTube. The phenomenon of private
individuals contributing (visual) information has generally
been described as citizen journalism, personal publishing
or grassroots media. It includes almost everything imaginable
ranging from private online diaries to comments on world politics.
The precise source, context or aim of that footage remains
for the most part unclear, unproven and unorganized. The visual
anarchy this causes is immense. It is colourful, exhausting,
trivial, exciting and shockingly straight.
According to Winston Churchill ‘democracy is the worst
form of government except for all those
others that have been tried.’ For the Internet a similar
situation is true. It is not a real information democracy,
but, despite all the disadvantages and restrictions, the most
democratic
medium to exist so far. The Internet offers space simultaneously
for the most diverse views of our world. Ultimately it leaves
us behind in a mess of human realities. We are almost free
to choose our own truth. But truth only exists if you share
it...'

The exhibition deals with the way one gets information and
the way this is processed, how the images can influence history
and how far they can serve as proof?
Maarten Van den Eynde (1977, BE/NL) devoted his life to discover
the mysteries of our future past and investigate the viability
of Genetology, a self invented 'science of first things'.
Sign will host the first exhibition of a section of Vanden
Eynde's Genetologic Research: the category Archaeology.
Which pieces of the puzzle are necessary to recreate the present
in the future? How do you write or re-write history? (www.genetology.net).
Especially for this occasion Vanden Eynde presents "Archaeology
of Genetology" the first quire of a larger publication
about Genetology. (design: Raf Vancampenhoudt).
Meike Eggers (1973 Dld.): "Pyjamocracy - a glimmer of
you", focuses on amateur footage depicting the traces
and effects of heroes, rulers, ideals and icons.
The installation combines a collection of historical and contemporary
amateur films and videos projected on the walls of a room.
Pyjamacracy describes not only the current democratisation
of images and media, but also the end of a former one-dimensional

"The Protagonist" from Michael Anhalt (1976, Dld.)
refers to the political situation in the German Democratic
Republic and its panoptical system of power, surveillance
and control.
The work questions photographs and its usage as evidence and
remembrance in relation to the author. It displays a persons'
conflict being the inmate and warder.
The work combines former secret images made by the STASI,
personal and cinematic found footage, off the record, and
a personal family photographic archive from the from the GDR.

In februari 2008 was ik Teheran, tot voor kort het land met de meeste weblogs ter wereld. Hoe leef je onder een dogmatisch regime waar je officiële rol meestal strikt gescheiden is van je privé leven? Ik begon mijn eigen weblog. Niet als Meike, maar als Nouria een fictieve Iraanse jonge vrouw. Hierin verzamelde ik gesprekken die ik met Iranezen voerde, mijn eigen indrukken van het land, foto’s die ik met mijn mobiele telefoon maakte, en commentaren op het internet. In het begin communiceerde Nouria uitsluitend met haar Nederlandse vriendin Lotje (ik). Het weblog kreeg snel aandacht van derden en zo reageerden ook ‘echte mensen’ op Nouria en haar leven.
Op het internet gaan fictie en feiten in elkaar over. Dit realiteitsvacuüm verandert de betekenis van camerabeelden, media en waarheid. Welk beeld van Iran zou het weblog weergeven? Hoe zouden andere internet gebruikers op Nouria’s verhaal reageren?
